"The Media has selective influences on people"
I agree with Defleur's theory above, as I believe that the media does in fact have an effect on the public whether it's in a positive or negative way.
My film and tv choices I have talked about are examples of media where you are likely to get an influence on some people, and which I am looking at the geeky influences that may have occurred. In American Pie there are the particular characters such as Finch and Stifler who are at different wave lengths when it comes to confidence and popularity. These noticeable aspects about them may influence an audience to not be like either of the two characters as they have unfortunate experiences or unexpected reputations.
The 40 Year Old Virgin has an immediate influence on its audience as they find the storyline funny and don't like the idea of it all happening to themselves. On the other hand, the personal side to this mans way of life may come off influential as well, based on the fact he just hasn't had the opportunity.

American Pie (1999)
The following clip shows a prank that Stifler plays on Finch at school. Stifler being the overly confident guy he is, thought it would be funny to put Pentalax in Finch's drink.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2000)
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation is an American crime drama television series that premiered in October 2000. The series follows Las Vegas criminalists as they use physical evidence to solve all sorts of murders and crimes.
I think CSI can come across as geeky in the sense that someone enjoys it because they are interested in all the Sci-fi action. Shows like these can also inspire viewers to want do something similar as a career. In each episode you see the investigators undergo dealing with all kinds of crime and murder cases, some of which you would need a strong stomach for.
The network later added spin-offs CSI: Miami and CSI: NY.

Classwork
Defleur: "The media has selective influences on people."
- Young people growing up with certain media around them
- Media may influence them to be geeky about something (Sci-fi, video games, internet)
Judith Butler: "Identity is performed through your expression."
- Geeks/Nerds can show their passion for something that isn't so popular with everyone else, which makes people associate them with geeks
- If someone is intelligent towards something e.g. computers, maths etc, they are going to express this knowledge and gradually this can form some way of representing their identity.
Problematic quote: "Media seems to reflect reality but in fact they construct it."
This quote appears to me as a problematic way of believing something. I agree with it partially, as the media does construct a lot of what happens in reality today. Whether it's youth or adults for example, the media has created many different ways of representing both generations, and the majority of which will be seen as stereotypes. The more the media creates that is based on these particular representations, the more the audience is going to reflect off them and influenced into certain ways.

Doctor Who (2005)
Doctor Who has always had a geeky side to it from the fact the Doctor know's pretty much everything, and has all these gadgets not to mention a time travelling machine. There is always a relation to science in some way whether it's about things such as Earth or Space for example. Today the show is more appreciated particularly by younger fans, but because it's been around for so long you are more than likely going to come across adult fans. Some people would assume having an interest in Doctor Who is quite nerdy simply because of the sci-fi relation it has.
The trailer appears to be
The IT Crowd (2006-)
The show revolves around the three staff members of it's IT department: a geeky genius named Maurice Moss, the workshy Roy Trenneman, and the department head Jen Barber who knows nothing about IT. Moss and Roy are portrayed as socially inept geeks, and even though the company depend on their services, they are despised, ignored and considered losers by the rest of the staff. This therefore tells you that they are't exactly popular which is what some would expect in geeky characters. Roy tends to express his personality by wearing a different geek t-shirt in each episode, and which you could compare to The Big Bang Theory as one of their characters did a similar thing. Wearing clothes with geeky things on doesn't necessarily associate you as a geek, but with circumstances such as these characters where they perform geeky on a daily basis, they will no doubt be described as a geek.
Jen seems to correlate the show with The Big Bang Theory as well as she is the female amongst the dominant males.
